He was able to then possess that vessel and escape Minus World, being free at last to cause havoc to the Mushroom Kingdom and more. Once Mario got into it's grasp, the entity was able to make a clone out of Mario. He stumbled into it's very core, right where an unknown star entity is located. But he didn't just fall into Minus World. Mario one day gets glitched into the Minus World by unknown means.
